A
T4 graded tornado reaching a speed of 135mph ripped through Birmingham
especially Kings Heath, Moseley, Balsall Heath and Sparkbrook. Homes
and businesses were destroyed - many local people were probably
uninsured. The famous Ladypool Road was closed for over a week.
St Barnabas' church lost its roof and is closed pending repairs.
St Agatha's suffered some roof damage and damage to the recently
restored tower but is very much open for worship. If it hadn't been
for the recent restoration the damage may have been much much worse.
Unfortunately the neighbouring Ladypool School suffered even more
damage.

In
the presence of HRH The Earl and Countess
of Wessex the completion of restoration work on the tower and other
parts of the building was celebrated with a special service.
Also at St Agatha's were the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, the Bishop
of Birmingham and the Bishop of Ebbsfleet. After the service the
royal party visited the adjoining Ladypool Road School.
