A Birmingham boxing club is celebrating a knockout
success in its bid for much needed funds to buy new equipment.
Birmingham City Amateur Boxing Club applied
for a grant, together with more than 2,000 other sports organizations
from across the country, and came out punching above their weight
to secure £500.
The club was one of 15 who were succesful this
time around in the Cash 4 Clubs scheme, which aims to pump money
into grassroots sport.
Birmingham coach Frank O'Sullivan said thmoney
was a massive boost as it would provide much-needed punch bags and
other boxing, gym and protective equipment for the club, whih keeps
youngsters off the street and on the straight and narrow.
He said "We are extremely grateful to the
scheme for awarding this to our club and feel humbled they should
choose us. Hopefully we will make them prod to be involved with
us."
Cash 4 Clubs is funded by UK on-line betting
firm BetFair...the juding panel includes Dame Kelly Holmes and BBC
commentator Barry Davies.
O'Sullivan said the money would also allow for
work to begin on renovating the facilities at the gym with provision
for an additional changing room for women.
He said the club, based at St Agatha;s Church,
Sparkbrook, had seen many successes in the past and sent one member,
Khalid Yafei, to the 2008 Olympics. Khalid and his brother Gamai
are part of Team GB and it is anticipated that both will compete
at the 2012 Olympics in London.
